Brief History

A first prototype of ATLAS.ti was developed within the framework of the interdisciplinary research project ATLAS (1989-1992) at the Technical University of Berlin. The project was initiated by the Department of Psychology under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Dr. Heiner Legewie) and entailed close cooperation between computer scientists, psychologists, linguists, and future users.

Starting in 1993, the prototype was further developed to its first commercial release by the author, Thomas Muhr which is now being used all over the world by major institutions and individuals engaged in qualitative research.

In 1996, a first version of ATLAS.ti for Windows was released. Based on the ideas of its predecessor, it also incorporated a large variety of new concepts, functions and improvements.

2004 saw the long awaited advent of ATLAS.ti 5.0, packed with the most powerful features you can expect from a state-of-the-art qualitative data analysis tool.

The year 2004 also saw the birth of ATLAS.ti Scientific Software Development GmbH, a step long overdue.

Time for a move: in 2006 ATLAS.ti moves to a larger and more central location in Berlin.
