What Training Participants Say

I have to admit that I got value for my money and time in terms of qualitative data analysis and the use of the ATLAS.ti software. For two days my data, the instruction in qualitative data analysis and the software were seamlessly integrated. It was more more than just coding, as the Network views and Query tools added other dimensions to my transcripts. The methodological approach recommended by Dr. Contreras provides a useful framework for working with qualitative data. It was extremely hands-on and is guaranteed to be an eye-opener. I eagerly await the Advanced Online Course and other courses involving Dr. Contreras and ATLAS.ti software.

Qualitative Data Analysis with ATLAS.ti Seminar
December 12, 2011

With my very busy schedule, I decided to focus in on the two-day and in-person seminar. At the end of the day, that was the best decision that I made when selecting the educational strategy. I brought the first six interviews that we have collected and I was able to begin building my coding and strategy as the workshop progressed. Throughout, Dr. Contreras was attentive, highly professional, and exceptionally knowledgeable about ATLAS.ti. And I really appreciate that he is an applied cultural anthropologist with an appreciation for both inductive and deductive approaches to qualitative research. He knows the software and understands qualitative research! This experience was not only a project analysis jumpstart, but one excellent use of my time!

After using ATLAS.ti on my own for a year, the introductory course brought everything together. More important was the the link between the software and the the methodology questions being used by the researcher. I am now able to explore my research with a greater degree of integration and complexity.  I intend to participate in other training sessions in the future.

Dr. Contreras helped me to understand how to get started with ATLAS.ti. He did an excellent job of building on the many tools in ATLAS.ti without confusing them, from basic to more advanced. He also provided the rationale behind tool choice--for times when there is more than one option--and provided a helpful (and unexpected) methodological rationale for specific tool use and the strategy behind it.

Learning to utilize a powerful data analysis tool such as ATLAS.ti seemed to be at best a daunting project.  Nevertheless, Dr. Contreras in depth knowledge of the software, insight as an experienced user, and patience as an instructor transformed what could be an overwhelming journey into a manageable learning opportunity.  By the completion of the introductory session, I was excited to plunge into my own research project, confident in being able to utilize the software, and reassured that EQR Training would be available to answer any challenges that I would encounter.

Ricardo's training was a lucid introduction to ATLAS.ti for someone starting from square one. He explained well the organization of the software and the basic functions. After the training I felt that I could work on my own from the manual more effectively. Having the security of 30 days to ask follow up questions is a nice added benefit. While this training only scratches the surface of the functionality of ATLAS.ti, it is a good beginner's orientation.

Dr. Contreras' ATLAS.ti introductory training is absolutely essential for the novice user of this very complex software. He has a profound understanding of the the concepts that guide the design of the software. His three sessions were not only a valuable experience for the new user of ATLAS.ti, but an excellent review of many of the central concepts of qualitative research design.  He explains these concepts in clear language, solicits feedback from his students throughout each session, and beautifully models the data management and coding process from beginning to end.

This is a great webinar for obtaining foundational tools needed to operate within ATLAS.ti and to begin a research study. I am a doctoral student without any basic knowledge of the processes needed to conduct a research study. I found Dr. Contreras to be very knowledgeable of this software and research methodology in general. He gave several great tips and answered all of my questions clearly and thoroughly. In addition, he creates an interactive learning environment, allowing time for reflection and practice. Moreover, he can access your screen (with permission, of course) if there are specific questions related to your concerns. I highly recommend this course!

I found this training to be very useful as an introduction to ATLAS.ti. The fact that I have completed my doctorate was also a beneficial backdrop for the workshop in that my dissertation was a qualitative study. Consequently, having completed a qualitative study (utilizing focus groups and interviews) helped me to relate to, and better appreciate, ATLAS.ti as a research tool, in terms of its functions and especially in terms of the flexibility built into it. Dr. Ricardo Contreras, was excellent in his role as workshop instructor/leader— showing experienced competence, insight, and a very personable approach. I highly recommend him as an ATLAS.ti trainer.

This was an excellent workshop for familiarization with the ATLAS.ti software. Workshop attendees were given all of the knowledge and handouts necessary to apply ATLAS.ti to their respective research projects. In addition to Dr. Contreras being quite knowledgeable in ATLAS.ti, he is also very meticulous in answering any of the attendees' questions.  One can sense Dr. Contreras' dedication to teaching, especially the knowledge required for research in qualitative venues. As it turns out, ATLAS.ti is the perfect software to help me extract the data required for my own qualitative research. This workshop definitely compressed the learning curve required to learn the software. I can now confidently code, analyze, and interpret my subject data. It was well worth attending.  I would like to thank Dr. Contreras for offering this workshop and for making his knowledge easily available to new users of ATLAS.ti.

Our second round of ATLAS.ti training with Ricardo was absolutely as useful and informative as I expected after going through the initial trainings with him as our guide. This workshop was focused on two projects, neither of which I am working on, and I was still able to take away so much that will be applicable to the project I'm currently working on. I'm still so impressed with Ricardo's ability to go above and beyond what one would think an instructor would do: he took the time to really understand the projects so that he could answer very specific questions and give tailored suggestions. Going into the ATLAS.ti workshop, I was quite apprehensive because I have a tendency to be completely inept at all things computer-related.  I was pleasantly surprised, however, to realize that although ATLAS.ti is a powerful and exciting analysis tool, it is logical and easy to use with a little practice. The software itself has made organizing and systematizing my literature review fast, easy, and even enjoyable.I couldn't have utilized all that ATLAS.ti has to offer without the workshop. Ricardo was wonderful; his knowledge of the software combined with his thorough and easy to follow instructions made the workshop beyond worthwhile.  I was incredibly impressed that anyone could make learning an analysis software so easy! There was a lot of hands on learning, as well as very useful graphs and charts to help us make sense of the web that you can create with ATLAS.ti.   Two thumbs up to the workshop, the instructor, and the software!

Using our own data for the training and having time to code with Dr. Contreras' assistance was invaluable.  Over the course of a day and a half we were able to design the overall analytic strategy for our study as well as get a good start on the coding. My perspective on qualitative data analysis  has been changed forever.   Thank you, and thank you for your continued support through e-mail as we seek to apply all that we have learned.

This was an exceptional training experience.  The workshop was very hands on.  All concepts and their applications were clearly explained.  I highly recommend this to qualitative researchers.  Ricardo does not only show you how to use the ATLAS.ti software but also how to enhance and refine your qualitative analysis methodology.

The level of individualized help and direction was phenomenal and allowed for personal project specific questions and accomplishments. Dr. Contreras was flexible in the course of scheduling to allow for changes in direction that applied to our group of four.  Although ATLAS.ti is not a difficult system to navigate, it would be difficult and time consuming to try and understand the applications and lexicon without a guide such as Dr. Contreras'.  After just 2 days of intensive training, I feel confident in my ability to use ATLAS.ti and able to articulate my understanding of the program capabilities to my coworkers. This training was truly invaluable!

Thank you for an excellent training!  Not only it enriched my understanding on the capacity of the software, but it also it expanded vastly my skills on data organization and analysis to approaching the analysis of my research study.  I appreciate your feedback and guidance specific to each of our project, and your willingness to work well beyond the agenda of the training.  The training surpassed all my expectation on the quality of the information, content, and skills, and I know it will make a significant contribution towards my PhD.

Ricardo...the true benefit of this workshop was beyond how to operate within the software.  You provided organizational and methodological guidance that will result in more valuable and usable outputs of using ATLAS.ti.  Thank you for your dedication to our learning!

This workshop was very worthwhile. It is practical and hands-on.   The key is bringing your own data to the workshop so that it is completely relevant to each participant.   Professor Contreras is very thoughtful about exposing the functionality of the software in a way that helps the novice maximize its capaibilities without overwhelming the user.   Professor Contreras offered very useful commentary on methodological approaches for qualitative analysis. Overall, this was well worth the time! Thank you!!

Dr. Contreras' ATLAS.ti workshop cleared up a great deal of confusion that I had about the program from just reading the manual and experimenting with my own data sets.  He has enabled me to use it in a way that I can now better organize and make connections among my in-depth interviews, particularly in terms of representing thematic content and semantic links graphically through the family coding, network tools, and memo functions.  It makes the task of synthesizing large amounts of qualitative information far more systematic and manageable, with the added  benefit of writing passages as memos linked directly to quotes that you can eventually incorporate into articles, books, and reports.
