Sort and Sift, Think and Shift Qualitative Data Analysis Camp II: Stepping Back (Analysis Inventory and Assessment)

Learn to integrate ATLAS.ti within the context of careful qualitative data analysis methods. This course highlights software features that demonstrate the importance of “Stepping Back” to assess what you are learning and introduce critical reflection on the strategies you are using in your analysis. The main goal is to avoid a rule-bound, step-by-step approach in favor of a dynamic deep exploration of data. We will look at basic tools for reviewing key quotes, codes and memos. Co-occurrence tools will be featured as one of several ways to contemplate important relationships between codes. Finally, diagramming tools will allow for exploration of ideas that emerge throughout your work and for presentation of key connections you unearth. Qualitative software functions used to achieve the goals outlined above will be shown seminar-style and participants will then adopt them in extended practice.

UC Berkeley Social Research Workshops:Practical Qualitative Data Analysis in ATLAS.ti

This two-day workshop course will provide both a conceptual background and practical experience in computer assisted qualitative data analysis (CAQDA) using ATLAS.ti. The workshop begins by examining the core elements common to all CAQDA, regardless of methodological orientation, discipline/profession, or platform. After instruction in the fundamental aspects of CAQDA, the course turns to the logic of the ATLAS.ti program, and how it functions as a tool for CAQDA. The majority of the workshop consists of hands on practical instruction and exercises in ATLAS.ti. By the end of the course, participants will have all the conceptual and practical tools necessary to employ Atlas to its full capacity in their current or future projects involving qualitative data.

Topics covered include:

  1. How to perform the fundamentals of computer aided qualitative data analysis in ATLAS.ti,
  2. The specific strategies necessary for dealing with different types of data including ethnographic field notes, in-depth interviews, texts, audio, video, and documents,
  3. How to organize your data set,
  4. How to construct and deploy a coding scheme for your project,
  5. Making the best use of memos,
  6. Inductive and deductive strategies for investigating substantive relationships in your data,
  7. The query tool and reverse polish notation, and
  8. Advanced functions in ATLAS.ti (i.e. networks, geocoding, quantitative output, supercodes and snapshots, multi-researcher projects, tools for inter-coder reliability, etc.).

The following describes the typical curriculum, but is tailored to your needs, existing skills, and the status of your current project.

Day 1 covers the basics:

  • the basic concepts behind the program and all its features
  • Strategies for setting up your project and designing a data analysis
  • The theory and practice of coding
  • What comes after coding to build a powerful qualitative analysis

Day 2 introduces the advanced features of the program:

  • The use of graphical networks from the very beginning stages of your project for modeling, concept mapping, and theory-building
  • Strategies for using complex retrievals with the Query Tool
  • Strategies and tools for teamworking
  • Strategies for using other media
